Gangwon Province |
There is a very interesting but sad story behind this song. First of all, Arirang does not have any literal meaning in Korean.
According to some old stories....there was a boy and a girl who fell in love while picking camellia flowers near a staith at Auraji (아우라지). This story have two versions, In the first one, the boy tries to cross the Auraji to meet his love but drowns and then the girl sings this sorrowful song after he dies. According to the second version boy cannot cross the Auraji to meet his love because of the high water level so, they sing this song to express there sorrow. Because even after being so close they cannot meet each other.
Pride of Korea
Arirang is listed twice on the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage List. South Korea (in 2012) and North Korea (in 2014) both successfully submitted the song for inclusion on UNESCO ICH list.
Today, the song is is sung in both North and South Korea as a symbol of unity, since the Korean war.
