Changdeokgung Palace

Seoul is the metropolitan city of South Korea with its beautiful modern infrastructure, but located right in the heart of Seoul is one of the Korea's 13 UNESCO sites - The Changdeokgung Palace (창덕궁) also known as Eastern Palace.

Widely spread on 110 acre area. It was built in 15th century by King Taejong of the Joseon Dynasty as the residence of the royal family.

The palace was destroyed many times during different historical events (japanese invasion, because of Manchu Qing etc.) but even after many reconstructions and repairing works the architectures were still able to make it look like the original design.

It is one of the well preserved  five grand palaces of Joseon dynasty. This palace was built as the secondary home for the royal family after Gyeongbokgung Palace.

Changdeokgung Palace is beautifully built that it harmonizes with nature very well. The structure of the palace combines nicely with environment.

There are many buildings in this palace like - Donhwamun Gate, Seonjeongjeon Hall, Buyeongjeon Pavilion etc. so we can say that 'Changdeokgung' is the collective name for these buildings in 110 acers area.

The different structures in Changdeokgung Palace....

  • Donhwamun Gate
This is the main Gate of the palace. It is a two story wooden structure with a pavilion style look.
Donhwamun Gate was distroyed during the japanese invasion in 1592. It was restored later.
  • Daejojeon Hall
This hall was built for the queen as her residence. The structure of the hall is quite unique with a central bedroom surrounded by many small size rooms.
  • Kyujanggak
This is a library used by the royal people of palace.
  • Huijeongdang Hall
This hall was constructed for the women of palace but later it became a place were emperors used to rest and do there official work.
  • Injeongjeon Hall
This is the main hall of palace. This hall was used for official gatherings, national ceremonies etc.

  Huwon

The Secret Garden

Today Huwon is famously known as the Secret Garden. It was constructed for the royal families. There are thousands of species of different plants and trees in the garden.
As the garden was constructed for the personal use and it was totally restricted for any outsider to enter there without kings permission, the garden had been called Geumwon ( Forbidden Garden) or Naewon (Inner Garden).
Today this garden is called Biwon (Secret Garden). Although the Garden has many names ,the one which was commonly used  during Joseon dynasty period was 'Huwon'. This Garden was not in the first construction plan of the palace it was later expanded by King Seonjo.

Changdeokgung Palace was recognised as the World Heritage in 1997 by UNESCO.
UNESCO discribed the palace as an "outstanding example of far Eastern Palace architecture and garden design."
