Korean Food

Food shows the culture of any country and it also tells the story of their tradition.

History tells, Korean people have maintained their food habits since the ancient time. Korean people have a unique theory about food. They believe that the food and medicine have the same origin and the same functioning as well. They say 'Food is the best Medicine'. Korean people believe that the main cause of illness is the food that we eat and the way we consume it. This particular idea about food left a visible impact on the development of the traditional Korean medicine. The Koreans had the ideology that we should use medicine only when the food fails.

Fermented Food

Understanding Korean traditional food will be more easy if we learn a word 'Fermentation', a process of chemical reactions that help food to 'mature' so that the food becomes more nutricious and tastier. They can be stored for longer period.
The different type of fermented Korean food are Chong guk jang (청국장 soybean paste), Ganjang (간장 Soy Sauce),Gochujang (고추장 Chili paste), Jeotgal (젓갈 salted seafood) and Kimchi (김치). Among them kimchi is one of the most popular Korean traditional dishes.

Kimchi (김치)
Kimchi is a fermented dish which is basically made of napa cabbage and spices.
It is now gaining a worldwide status as a representative dish of Korea.

 The ingredients of kimchi differs according to the region. There are over 100 known varieties of Kimchi like- Nabak Kimchi ( Water kimchi), Yeolmn Kimchi (young summer radish kimchi), Kkakdugi Kimchi (Diced radish kimchi), Oi Sobagi (Cucumber Kimchi), Godeulppaegi Kimchi (Korean lettus Kimchi), Gat Kimchi (Leaf musterd kimchi) etc.

Many health and food magazines has selected kimchi as one of the healthiest food on the earth.

Bulgogi (불고기)

Bulgogi literally means 'fire meat' is actually a traditional Korean Grilled dish made of sliced marinated beef or pork. Recently bulgogi has adopted as fast food and there are many Korean restaurants doing experiment with it and trying to give it a new look like Bulgogi flavoured pizza and hamburger.

Bibimbap (비빔밥)

Bibimbap literally means 'mixed rice'. It is a dish served as a bowl of white cooked rice basically topped with gochujang (chili paste), vegetables, raw or fried egg and sliced meat.

 There are varieties of bibimbap like Dolsot bibimbap, Jeonju bibimbap, Jinju bibimbap, Tongyeong bibimbap etc.

According to a survey in 2011, bibimbap was listed at number 40 on world's most delicious dishes.


      These are only few Korean traditional dishes but south Korea is full of different flavours like a heaven for those who are always on a look for different food adventures.

Gyeonghuigung Palace

One of the five grand palaces of Joseon dynasty period - The Gyeonghuigung Palace (경희궁) . The Gyeonghuigung Palace The palace is located in Seoul, South Korea. It is constructed in 17th century during the reign of King Gwanghae (Yi-Hon). For around 200 years this beautiful palace was home for ten Joseon kings. The palace is also known as Seogwol (Western Palace) because its location is towards west when compare with other neighboring palaces of Changdeokgung ( Eastern Palace) and Gyeongbokgung (Northern Palace). Changgyeonggung Palace

  Changgyeonggung Palace is one of the five grand palaces built in joseon dynasty period. This palace was built by king Sejong in the mid of  15th century for his father (Taejong). It was originally named as 'Suganggung Palace'. Changgyeonggung Palace  In 1480's, when king Seongjong ascended the throne he renovated and extended this palace and renamed it as 'Changgyeonggung'.    This palace was destroyed by fire in 1592 during the Imjin war. However, it was partially rebuilt by latter joseon kings. But during japanese colonial period (1910-1945) this palace was again destroyed but this time the japanese built a botanical garden, a zoo and a museum on that location.
